Where Care Feels Like Family: How EverTrue PACE Restored Richard’s Joy

For EverTrue PACE participant Richard, a fall through a roof split his world into “before” and “after.”

Before, there was a musical career, long days roofing and the rhythm of a life built on hard work. After the fall came years of pain, surgeries and uncertainty. He soldiered through five major back operations, and when doctors suggested a sixth, Richard couldn’t imagine enduring more.

“Recovery was just as bad, lots of falls and weakness in my legs” shared Richard. “I went to a lot of rehab centers that seemed to send me away as quickly as I was admitted. My days were starting to blur together, and I was ready to give up.”

Then someone suggested he should check out EverTrue PACE. It offered something Richard hadn’t experienced in years: hope.

Designed as a comprehensive, all-inclusive model, EverTrue PACE supports older adults with everything from medical care and therapy to transportation, meals and mental health counseling. But what sets it apart is its interdisciplinary approach with teams of professionals working together to care for the whole person.

For Richard, that made all the difference.

“EverTrue PACE was available when I needed them and had therapists who helped me get back to myself,” said Richard. He also benefited from social workers who listened, reliable transportation and more personal connections, like a warm meal or help with daily tasks.

Encouraged by Chaplain Deborah who provides spiritual support at EverTrue PACE, Richard was feeling so good, he returned to writing music. He and other musically inclined EverTrue PACE participants have even formed their own group, The PACEmakers. He is working on a song about EverTrue PACE they plan to perform. “I’m just about to finish the third verse,” he says.

Today, he’s more relaxed, more hopeful and surrounded by the PACE community, which feels like family. “This is a blessed place,” he says. “I feel so much love in the building. It’s what I was missing.”
