You’ve been with EverTrue Tower Grove for decades. Take us back to the start!

I started back in 1985 as part of the maintenance team. It was April of 1985. I’ve been here 41 years. I just love working here. The people are great. It has been a wonderful place to work.

How did you decide to come work at EverTrue Tower Grove?Did you ever think you would create a career in aging services?

My uncle was working here and I had just got out of school. He said, “You should apply for a job at Tower Grove.”  And they hired me. I had twin daughters. I started here when they were just six months old. And that encourages you to work more and stay busy to make sure you can take care of your family. It’s been a great provider.

What are some of your favorite memories of your decades at EverTrue Tower Grove?

My favorite experiences have been with the residents. I really have loved getting to know every one of them. I have loved hearing all of their stories that they have shared with me. It has been a special relationship to be part of their lives.

What is the best advice you received from residents?

They looked out for me. They taught me how to invest. They told me that the most important part of investing was time, so I started when my twins were young. It really paid off because I was able to be smart about what I needed to do thanks to them. They told me you’re young and if you’re smart you’ll start saving a little bit. So, I started saving a little bit. It adds up! I was blessed to have that advice.

Speaking of investing, you’ve invested 40+ years at EverTrue Tower Grove. What is the culture like?

It has been a great place to work. Good teamwork. I just can’t say enough good things about it. The residents make me want to work even harder because they are so sweet. I just love it. They keep me coming back every day.

When you’re not working, what do you like to do for fun?

I swim. I boat. I have a country place in Washington County that my wife and I go to whenever we get a chance. We meet our kids up there when they can. I’ve got five grandchildren and the oldest is 22 and the youngest is 7.

If you didn’t go into Aging Services, what would you have done?

I would have been a contractor. That’s what my dad did. He was a tuck pointer in St. Louis. I have seven sisters. We all can tuckpoint. Having so many kids — he would take us to work, and he would teach us the trade because he was proud of the trade. He won a tuckpointing trophy in the city of St. Louis. He was really proud of that. He always told us that it was a trade we could fall back on even if you don’t want to do it permanently. In the winter tuckpointing work was slow. My first winter showed me why I wanted to come to EverTrue Tower Grove because some weeks you would work three days, some weeks five days.

When you think about EverTrue Tower Grove, what comes to mind?

It’s a great place to be with a lot of special people. The residents will actually try to help me to do the work sometimes! They believe in our community and I’m proud to have been part of it for 41 years.
