Creating a Community One Step at a Time
Like many of our EverTrue residents, Jeaneen Rodgers visited her future EverTrue Hilltop Heights home well before she became a resident.
“There was a Weight Watchers meeting in the common room that I came to with my daughter and it seemed like such a nice, welcoming community,” said Jeaneen. “When I was looking for a place, I applied right away as I knew it would be a good fit.”
Jeaneen has spent most of her life in the U.S. National Parks as a Park Host with her husband and then, after he passed, on her own. She fell in love with the EverTrue Hilltop Heights affordable housing community based on its green hills and its easy accessibility to walking pathways.
“I love walking every day that I can and this area of Eureka is perfect for a nice walk,” said Jeaneen. “I’ve even helped to found a walking club here where we try to reach new locations by the number of miles we walk.”
As one of the most traveled residents, Jeaneen has “walked” the club all over the world, from as far as Isreal and Africa to closer, like Florida or New York. The club is currently “walking” to Chicago, a distance of 323 miles. Once everyone turns in their miles to reach the destination, the community hosts a celebration.
“I might be 89 but I feel like I’m 30 with all the things that we have here to keep me busy,” said Jeaneen. In addition to walking, she is a fan of reading, puzzling and getting to know her fellow residents.
“I love finding time to arrange meals together, or cooking together or just getting to know someone,” said Jeaneen. “It keeps me energized and keeps me checked in to know everyone on my floor. We are all so similar even in our differences because we are all here in this community, making it work.”
Jeaneen says that the value of the community is great, but the feeling of the community is what keeps her at EverTrue Hilltop Heights.
“I moved here in September 2011 and I have made a lot of great memories,” Jeaneen continued. “The people here are what makes this place feel like home.”
