Fred Erickson

communications professional, ham radio operator & pastor EverTrue Lenoir Woods: Columbia, MO
“I have always stayed true to my ministry. Whatever I was doing, I still served part-time for small congregations.”

In a world where careers often take unexpected turns, Fred’s journey exemplifies the power of following both passion and faith. From television newsrooms to ham radios and from church ministry to building global communication networks, Fred’s communication and Christianity shaped a vibrant career and continues to enrich his life.

A Dual Path: Television and Ministry
While Fred was building his career in TV, he was pursuing a master’s degree in theology and communication. Already holding a theology bachelor’s degree, he believed that a background in television could complement his church leadership and enhance his ability to communicate faith-based messages.

Fred was hired to lead communication and education efforts within the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), supervising a variety of shows on TV and radio – eight broadcasts per week. His dedication to the church’s mission led him to serve as the director of broadcasting and later as chair of the Communication Commission for the National Council of Churches. This role brought him into contact with numerous denominations and gave him the opportunity to travel extensively to such places as London, Geneva, Rio de Janeiro, Toronto and Sao Paolo. Throughout this time, he also continued with direct ministry work. “Whatever I was doing, I still served part-time for small congregations,” he recalls.

Communication Through Crisis and Global Impact
While his role in the church was grounded in faith and service, his skills in communication proved invaluable beyond the pulpit. He trained others in the use of ham radios in places like the Congo and Guatemala, where he helped set up networks that connected remote villages to the outside world. During political upheavals and natural disasters, ham radio can be a critical communication tool.

His love of ham radio has endured. He even selected his current home at EverTrue Lenoir Woods because his particular apartment home had space for his ham radio antennae! “I’m on the air still at least twice a week. I’m in contact with people around the world,” he shares.

A Legacy of Service and Faith
Throughout his life, whether in the TV studio, the church, providing communications workshops or through his many volunteer efforts, one thing has remained constant: his deep connection to his faith and the church. “I have always stayed true to my ministry.”

His story is a reminder that a career isn’t just about work – it’s about making a difference and staying true to life according to you.
